Treadmill Rating (out of 10):
Distance: 1 mile (total)
Max Elevation: 1,000 feet
The Jim Green trail is a very well hidden gem in Atascadero. It is a trail that is well suited for people, dogs, horses, and bikes. People of all ages can easily do this trail. It is a fun hike around a beautiful hill that is surrounded on one side by the Chalk Mountain Golf Course. Mind you, it is also near the Atascadero sewer, so you may smell a few interesting smells in the early mornings. The trail is a single loop going around the entire hill and is only about 1 mile long.
I have taken my two sons on this hike and they have a great time. It is a nice hike if you only have a short amount of time to get outside and get some fresh air. The entire hike, if you make one loop, should only take 30-40 mintues.
You have to know Atascadero a little to get there, or you can click here for the map.
HOW TECHNICAL IS THE HIKE?
This hike is not technical at all. It is a great hike for those on a time crunch. Or, if you are training, it is a good hike to make loops (running, jogging, or bike riding). I have used the trail when training for the Wildflower Triathlon. The hike is only given a 1 on the treadmill scale because it is extremely easy with only 3 or 4 very short uphill sections.
WHO CAN DO THIS HIKE?
Everyone can do this hike. It is short enough that small kids will enjoy it and shouldn’t begin complaining until you reach the car. It is a fun and short hike for the entire family.
WHEN SHOULD I GO?
The Jim Green trail is great all year. I wouldn’t recommend hiking in the rain. It is best to head to the trail in the mid-morning or late afternoon (just in case it is too hot).
This is a hike for all ages and skill levels. You don’t need to really train for this hike as it is mostly a walk. But, as with any outdoor activity, you need to make sure you are capable of moderate cardiovascular exercise before attempting any hike.
